Pruning can be one of the best things you can do for your tree. However, if done improperly, it can be detrimental to your tree. The amount you prune, when you do it, and how you do it are all factors in proper pruning technique. Also, the type of cut is just as important as what you are cutting off. These general rules will help you not harm your tree, but if you are unsure after reading, don't hesitate to email us questions at finepinetreeservices@gmail.com.
A good rule of thumb for pruning is to not take more than 25% of a tree's mass in a single calendar year. Furthermore, the timing of pruning matters; typically, late spring or early summer is optimal, but it varies depending on many factors. For a full explanation on timing, follow this link:
There are two main cuts used to prune a tree: removal and reduction. Removal consists of obviously removing a whole branch. To properly remove a branch to optimize healing, cut just outside the branch collar (the bulge near the trunk). If the branch is large, you may want to cut multiple pieces off before the final cut to prevent the bark from stripping off the trunk. A reduction cut consists of only removing part of a branch and is best used on smaller branches. The best tool to use is a pole or hand lopper to ensure a clean cut; also, trying to cut back to a bud is best practice.
